Rating Criteria

Notwithstanding their occasional critical comments, Max and Simon have deep respect for the cartoonists who appear in the august pages of The New Yorker. Still, some cartoons are better than others, as even cartoon editor Robert Mankoff would probably admit. To that end, the Cartoon Companion rates the cartoons based on the following criteria:

6 – classic: hilarious and expertly rendered

5 – excellent: funny and well-drawn

4 – good: solid gag and good enough drawing

3 – fair: so-so gag and/or execution

2 – meh

1 – unworthy
